The Galaksija is a low-cost, open-source computer that’s designed to get around the Yugoslavian government’s ban on importing goods worth more than 50 Deutschmarks.

The instructions for making a Galaksija were printed in a magazine, along with a guide on how to source the components. The magazine’s initial print run of 30,000 sold out, and it was reprinted twice. In total, 100,000 copies of that issue were sold, and many thousands of Galaksijas were made, providing many Yugoslavians with their first experience of computing.

Because the Galaksija didn’t come with a case, people improvised their own, meaning no two Galaksijas look alike.
